Overview
Why Sri Lanka belongs on every Asia itinerary
Sri Lanka is one of the most diverse travel destinations in Asia. In two weeks you can climb an ancient rock fortress, ride one of the world's most beautiful train journeys through the tea country, search for leopards on safari and end the trip on a palm-fringed south-coast beach — all on an island smaller than Ireland.
Few countries make it this easy to combine culture, wildlife, mountains and beaches in a single trip. Distances are short, the tourist trail is well established, and the mix of Buddhist, Hindu, colonial and coastal cultures gives every day a completely different flavour.
It's excellent for both backpackers and luxury travellers. A dorm bed and a plate of rice & curry costs a few pounds; a colonial-era Galle Fort boutique or a tea-estate bungalow above Nuwara Eliya feels like a movie set. You choose the level, and both work.
The train journey from Kandy to Ella — through emerald tea plantations, waterfalls and misty tunnels — is often called the most scenic rail ride in the world. It's inexpensive, unforgettable and the highlight of many people's trip.
Add to that incredible food, some of the friendliest locals in Asia and prices that stretch every budget further than you'd expect, and you have one of the great two-week trips on the planet.
