When to go, and why the answer isn't one date
Vietnam stretches more than 1,650km from the Chinese border to the Gulf of Thailand, and its weather is really three weathers — a temperate north, a tropical centre and an equatorial south. That is why there is no single "best time to visit Vietnam". The month that gives you clear skies over Ha Long Bay is often the month Hoi An is under water; the one that empties Phu Quoc's beaches is the one that lights up Sapa's rice terraces.
The north (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa, Ha Giang, Ninh Binh) has four seasons: cool damp winters, warm dry springs, hot wet summers and a crisp golden autumn. The centre (Hoi An, Da Nang, Hue) runs on a two-season monsoon — long, sunny beach months from February to August and heavy rain with typhoon risk from September to January. The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong, Phu Quoc) is warm year-round, with a dry December-to-April and a wet-but-manageable May-to-November.
